Grayshott Stagers Open Day review
All the World’s a Stage… But Someone Has to Make the Tea (and the Cake!)
On Saturday 10th October, we threw open the doors to our rehearsal and performance space to show visitors what really goes into putting on a show. And it turns out there’s rather more to theatre than learning a few lines, remembering where to stand and trying not to trip over the scenery!

We had a specially written 10-minute comedy, performed a couple of times throughout the day, and a brilliant team of members ready to reveal the secrets of their particular theatrical specialisms. Visitors could explore every aspect of the production process, watch demonstrations and even have a go themselves. From lighting and sound to props, costumes and scenery, there’s a whole world of activity happening behind the scenes while the audience sits comfortably in the dark!
One of the highlights was seeing people take to the stage who had always enjoyed watching theatre but had never actually performed, alongside those returning to the boards after a break. We’re delighted that the day has already inspired some new faces to join us, both on stage and front of house, as well as new recruits to our backstage teams. The audience may never see the crew at work, but they’d certainly notice if they weren’t there!
Meanwhile, our musical theatre workshops were bursting with energy, with songs and dance routines from ABBA and Queen. There was plenty of fun, and we’re keeping our fingers crossed that we’ve persuaded a few more people to take the plunge and join us in a future musical. After all, who can resist a bit of ABBA, a Queen classic and the chance to discover their inner musical theatre star?
We also brought out a generous helping of our extensive archives, sparking happy memories, plenty of reminiscing and, inevitably, a few “Do you remember when…?” conversations. There was inspiration aplenty for our play and musical selection committees, too. You never know when an old programme, photograph or long-forgotten production might plant the seed for a future show!
All in all, it was a thoroughly enjoyable day: a chance to share our love of theatre, discover new talents, welcome potential new members and catch up with friends old and new.
And, of course, no Grayshott Stagers gathering would be complete without cake. We may make theatre, but we know our priorities!
A huge thank you to everyone who helped organise the day, demonstrated their skills, performed, served the cake, chatted and encouraged our visitors to get involved.
